Volunteer With Your Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Here are a couple great opportunities for our Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle families to learn more about volunteering in Bellevue, WA and Portland, OR. Check them out!

Explore Volunteering with Your Dog
June 1 • Bellevue, Wash.  7–8 p.m. at Delta Society, 875 124th Ave NE.
June 10 • Portland, Ore  7–8 p.m. at St. Vincent Medical Center, 9205 SW Barnes Rd.

Join a free one hour discovery session to see how you might be able to help bring joy, motivation and compassion to hospitalized patients, seniors in assisted living centers, help children learn to read and more.  If you discover your dog may not be right for this type of work, no problem, there are many other ways for you to get involved and connect with people who have a passion for animals and a desire to help others. These events are for humans only. For more information about the Bellevue event or to RSVP, email JoAnnT@DeltaSociety.org or call 425.679.5514. Just got the new issue of Modern Dog Magazine!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

We subscribe to a number of dog related magazines, one of which is Modern Dog. We just got their newest issue in the mail (Summer 2010) and think that Leona Lewis is looking fabulous on the cover! While quickly thumbing through it we came across an article that is titled Myth Barkers! A couple of the myths were pretty interesting, thought we’d share them with our Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle families.

1. Are dogs totally colour blind?

Your’re playing with your dog in a park, and notice she sometimes misses her toy in the grass. It’s brightly coloured enough. but she passes over it a few times and can’t seem to find it easily. Just how well do dogs perceive colour?

According to Dr. Coren, “Dogs see the world in two colours, whereas people see the world in three. Everything a dog sees are in shades of yellow and blue, so while they can see a tree they can’t pick up cherries.” As it so happens, the most popular color for your dog toys among consumers is usually bright shades of red or safety orange, so throwing a toy into a field makes it hard for your dog to find it. “In dog’s eyes it’s the same as the grass, only darker. So when Lassie runs by it, it’s not that she’s dumb, she just can’t see it.” Says Dr. Coren.

2. Is a dog’s mouth cleaner than a human’s mouth?

Eventually, your loyal dog will carry the toy back in her jowls and drop it at your feet. You pick the toy up, and it has a healthy coat of gooey slobber on it, made just slightly more disgusting by the dirt and grass in the mix. You ask yourself, is a dog’s mouth really any cleaner than a human’s mouth?

“The answer is mixed,” says Dr. Coren, “The saliva in a dog’s mouth contains antibiotic chemicals, and, to that extent, a dog licking a wound is helpful- but if he has been eating poop 10 minutes earlier, the answer is no.” Verdict: If you don’t know where your dog has been when he comes to give you a few good licks, you might want to five your face a wash after.

The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

We picked up a new and very informative book that we are loving right now! It’s titled The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette by Charlotte Reed. The book provides information on just about every situation you might face with your pooch, from party planning, travel, home grooming to proper beach dog behavior. If you’re looking for a new book we highly recommend this one! More information can be found on Miss Fido Manners website HERE.

Pet Tip-

Always take your dog for a walk and quick play session before going out to a restaurant. The walk will ensure he/she doesn’t need to eliminate anywhere near the restaurant, and the play session will tire him/her out so they will be more amenable to a long nap under your table while you are eating.

Thank you Jen for your kind note and update on Murphy! He looks great!

Hi Kim and Mollie-
Here is our most recent pictures of Murphy.  He is doing so great-and is such an amazing addition to our family.  He is loved by all of our family, friends and even all the strangers that stop us on the street to ask us what the breed of our adorable dog is.  We are sure to tell them about you and what a great experience we have had. The first picture was taken when Murphy was 11 weeks old-at our local yogurt shop.  The other ones are of him at 19 weeks at our local park on Mother’s Day.
All the best-

Jen
