PetMD’s Top 5 Puppy Training Tips

If you’re looking for a great resource of information on puppy training and wellness information you might want to check out PetMD, their website covers a wide range of topics and is very informative. Below is an article from their website on puppy training.

It is important to have a well-trained puppy. Not only does it make you look good in your friends’ and neighbors’ eyes, but it also means fewer accidents for you to clean up. Also, a well-trained puppy means a well-trained grown-up dog.

1. Be Patient

If you’re calm, your puppy will be less excitable. And please, no yelling — your puppy is just a baby. Remember, you are teaching your pup how to do things correctly because it does not know any better, the poor thing.

2. Treat Theory

We’re talking bribery here, plain and simple. When your puppy does something good, reward the behavior immediately with lots of praise and a delicious, healthy treat. If it makes you feel better, you can call the bribery “positive reinforcement.” The point is, your puppy will remember what happens when it does something good, and will continue doing it.

3. Secret Ignoring Business

Puppies believe the entire universe revolves around them, and one of the best things in life is all the attention they get (and treats, of course). If your puppy does something naughty, do not yell or reprimand; good or bad, it is still attention. Simply move away and ignore it. This method is very effective and is used to show the pup what you consider to be unacceptable behavior.

4. Replacement Therapy

A puppy does not know what it can and can not do until it is told. Instead of punishing your pup when it chews on a shoe, say “no” in a firm voice, and then take the item away, replacing it with one of the puppy’s allowable chew toys. Immediately praise it for chewing on the “good” toy. Soon, your puppy will be conditioned to the rules of the house.

5. Be Consistent

This says it all. Make sure you are consistent with everything you do so your puppy does not get confused. Dog therapy and anti-anxiety meds for an erratic puppy can be expensive down the road, so better to get the steps right the first time.

How to travel with your pet on an airplane

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Planning on taking a vacation? Hoping to take your Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle with you? Will you be traveling by airplane? Here are a few simple steps in preparing to take your four legged companion along with you.

First you’ll need to contact the airline you’re traveling with and make sure to let them know you’re adding a dog to your travel reservations. The airline will ask for some information on your pet, their breed, age and size. Let them know if your dog will be traveling in cabin with you, or if you need to check them into cargo. In order to take a pet in cabin with you, you need to have a soft sided airline approved carrier and the dog typically needs to be under 15lbs. Check with your airline though, because every airline has their own set of travel restrictions. If you plan on checking your dog in make sure you have a hard crate that is airline approved, is big enough for the dog to sit up in, stand and turn around without hitting their head on the top of the crate, you’ll also need to have food and water dishes attached to the doors of the crate.

Once you have the appropriate travel reservations made and the correct crate, you need to get a health certificate that is signed and dated in blue ink from your veterinarian. The airlines will ask for this when you are checking in your dog at the airport, this is just a piece of paper that deems them healthy to travel.

Some of our preferred airline carriers are-

Alaska Airlines

Continental Airlines

American Airlines

Other helpful things to bring with you when you travel with your pet are-
-A leash and collar for walking your pet before you check them in and after you pick them up.
-Make sure you have ID tags on your dog and on their crate with your name, phone number, address and name of the dog- along with your destination address and information.
-Bring along a bag of their kibble.

So when traveling with your pet remember to have the appropriate crate or kennel for them and check with the airline you’re traveling with as each airline has their own fees, rules and restrictions on traveling with pets.

Recommended Supplies

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

This is a list of recommended puppy supplies from Puppy Care HQ to have ready when you bring home your new Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle.

Supplies:

Bowls:  You’ll want to get two bowls, one for food and one for water.  Stainless steel is best as it’s heavier and won’t harbor bacteria as will plastic.  Ceramic works well also but can be easily broken or chipped if knocked over.  A self-watering bowl is great for constant supply of water.

Gate:  A gate is a helpful tool when you want to block off a portion of the house, or stairways, or to close off a supervised playroom.    Leaving your puppy in a large gated room may make your puppy feel lonely and displaced.  Dogs typically feel safest in small manageable spaces because they are den animals.

Playpen:  A playpen can be used to contain your puppy when you are out of sight, paper training, acclimating to other pets, and temporarily containing your puppy outside.  They can also be folded up and put away when not in use.

Crate:  Crates are great because they give your puppy his/her own place to play, rest, and feel safe.  It will also keep your puppy safe in your home and your home safe from your puppy while you are away.  They come in plastic, wire, and wicker.  If you plan to travel with your puppy a plastic crate can be used in the home (in a well ventilated environment) as well as while traveling.  Wire crates have better airflow and can be made more den-like by covering it with a blanket at night.  Wicker crates look nicer but can easily be chewed through.  For information on how to crate your puppy see the ‘Training & Crating’ section.

Bedding:  Store bought bedding is great but is better bought once your puppy is potty trained.  You can use an old blanket or some old towels until your puppy is housebroken.  If your puppy likes to chew you may want to skip the bedding altogether to avoid the ingesting of fibers.

Toys:  With an overwhelming variety of choices out there, it’s best to start with only one or two toys at first and see which one your puppy likes best, then stock up on that one.  Typically toys that bounce and roll are big winners, especially those that are oddly shaped, as they tend to bounce randomly.

Collars:  Collars made of cotton, nylon or leather that buckle are used to carry your puppy’s ID tags and do not slide or choke.  A training collar is used to discourage lunging and leading you on the leash. A puppy harness is also great for puppies when working on leash training, as it does not pull on their neck.

Leashes:  You may want to invest in a few different types of leashes.  A nylon leash that is 4 to 6 feet in length is good for going on walks and indoor training.  A retractable leash, made of nylon or canvas and are 30 feet and over, is great for letting your puppy run around outside and can later be used for off leash training.
