Manor Lake Penny

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Thank you Ozzie for the lovely photo of Penny and for the update!

Hi Kim and Mollie,

We just wanted to reach out to you and give you a Penny update. She is such an amazing dog. She is doing very well. Loves going to the farm where she runs and plays in the different streams, plays with my mother in law’s dogs and just loves running through the outdoor riding ring. She is doing very well in her puppy classes and is sitting, staying and lying down like a champ. On nice days we have been taking her through town where we are constantly asked what breed she is and where we got her. Everyone comments on how wonderful her face is and how wonderful her temperament is. Ironically, we ran into a family who just that morning was on the Manor Lake website. The mother has two daughters that are roughly the same age as our two girls. Penny was a real hit that afternoon. The family asked who Penny’s parents were and they mentioned that they would be contacting you with questions. I have a co-worker that recently met Penny and she also would like to contact you about a puppy in the future. The kids are over the moon with her as well. Emily recently told us how happy she is to have Penny in our family. It makes her really happy when Penny puts her head on Emily’s lap.

Here is a picture of her hanging out in her favorite bean bag.

Thanks again for everything!

Manor Lake Gracie Rose

Thank you Ike and Renee for these awesome photos of Gracie! We love them!

Kim and Mollie,

We wanted to give you an update of our wonderful Manor Lake Gracie Rose.  She is 7 months old and absolutely loves life.  She loves her two mile walk twice a day.  She just recently finished a 4 week leadership class with 10 other dogs and passed with flying colors.  She can’t wait to go to Doggie Day Care each Wednesday and her social skills with other dogs are amazing.

She loves going to Petco, Pet Smart, Borders and a local hardware store where people stop us all the time and rave about how adorable she is and well mannered.  The staffs at above mentioned stores love seeing us come in.

We can’t thank you enough for Gracie.  She makes us laugh everyday and we can’t imagine our life without her.

We’ve attached a picture of Gracie with one of the clerks at the local hardware store, one with our granddaughter, Emily and one of Gracie waiting for the great pumpkin.

Sincerely,

Ike and Renee

2010 ALAA Breeders Conference in Atlanta, Georgia

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Jerry Hope, Kim and Mollie

Breeders at the conference

Kim and I even won some goodies in the raffle!

Kim and I had the opportunity to fly down to Atlanta, GA for the 2010 ALAA Breeder’s Round table over the weekend. This is an annual event that is put on by the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA). This year we had the opportunity to listen to published dog trainer Jerry Hope, he is the author of “The Breeder’s Guide to Raising Superstar Dogs”. Jerry’s program focuses on helping breeders with techniques to provide an enriching environment for puppies. He spoke about the bio sensor tests for stimulation as a great way to socialize puppies, which was great because we do this with our puppies and have written about it in a previous blog post. In addition to learning more about Jerry’s tips on dog/puppy training we had the opportunity to see again and meet other breeders that were in attendance. It’s always fun and enjoyable to catch up with and make new friends!

Centennial Park in Atlanta

In addition to attending the conference Kim and I were excited to do a little bit of sight seeing. We stayed at The Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The hotel was located in the same building at CNN”s World Headquarters, it was also near Centennial Park. The World of Coke and The Georgia Aquarium (which is actually the world’s largest aquarium!). We had a great time in Atlanta! We’re already looking forward to next year’s conference which will most likely be taking place somewhere on the West Coast, possibly California!

Thank you Tracy for this wonderful update!

Kim and Mollie,

It is already Sophie’s six month birthday. She has been such a great addition to our family. Her temperament is unbelievable. She loves to snuggle and go on long walks. My twins love to play chase with her in and out of the house. With this being our second Manor Lake puppy we were anxious to see how she compared to our Chloe. Once again we have been delighted with our newest baby girl. Thank you again for taking the time to maintain this wonderful breed of dog.

Sincerely,

Thank you Valerie for this nice note and sweet photo of Kona!

Hi Kim and Mollie,

Here is a picture of our Kona.  He’s eight months old now and enjoying our family.  Kona is a character-he plays with our 4 year old and 2 year old sons as if he were one of them. He wants to go with them to their daycare every morning and loves taking car rides.  He also loves peanut butter-that’s his special treat.

Thank you for breeding such a great puppy! Sorry it took so long to send a picture.

Take care,

Chef Kerry Heffernan floats above it all in Sag Harbor

‘You will catch a fish today.”

So decrees Kerry Heffernan, the chef at South Gate in the Essex House, as he pulls his white McKee Craft boat from the small marina near his Hamptons weekend house. He straps a tiny yellow lifejacket on his red Australian labradoodle, Benny.

Not that we doubt him. Heffernan (who previously worked at Eleven Madison Park and the now defunct Mondrian restaurant in NYC) has been casting lines for more than 15 years. In fact, the bottom drawer of the Sub-Zero refrigerator in his kitchen contains, among his recent trophies, a massive striped bass that he caught a couple of days earlier.

Finding a big striped bass is no real surprise if you look at the walls of Heffernan’s approximately 4,000-square-foot, grayish-blue and cream-colored, four-bedroom Colonial that sits on Upper Sag Harbor Cove.

“This is one of my favorite things,” Heffernan says, pointing to a framed photograph called “The Five Horseman,” taken by his friend Jim Levison — it’s a picture of bass feeding.

There is another framed picture of a striped bass above one of the fireplaces. Upstairs, just outside Heffernan and wife Grace’s bedroom, you’ll find small prints of sea bass, porgy and menhaden on the walls. Next to the bed is a hardcover copy of Richard Ellis’ “Tuna: Love, Death and Mercury.”

Of course, there are a few non-fish-related artifacts in his home, too.

On the living room wall is a rare painting of a Korean landscape by Shim Jae Sup that Grace’s grandfather bought in the early 1990s and was given to the couple as a wedding gift by Grace’s mother. It’s opposite a drawing of a flower by Robert Kushner (who did the mosaics for the Tabla restaurant right by Eleven Madison Park — both are owned by Heffernan’s former boss, Danny Meyer).

The upstairs is where you’ll find the master suite, which has two massive his-and-hers walk-in closets. Also on the second level is a room for Heffernan’s sons — Liam, 12, and Kiernan, 10 — from his first marriage; and on the other side of the house is a combination gym/guest room with a treadmill, weights and a Murphy bed.

“This is the closest to fully decorated it’s been,” Heffernan says about the house, which he and his wife bought in 2008 when he was starting up South Gate. They immediately undertook a complete top-to-bottom renovation with Sag Harbor architect David Sherwood and Eric Clough and Tania Chau of 212 Box for the interiors.

“We wanted to keep the same footprint,” Heffernan says. “My wife designed it with the architect.

“We started in late April or May. We finished at the end of August. They did an amazing job — at one time there were 30 cars [from contractors] on the street here.

(As if that weren’t enough, Kerry and Grace got married during the renovation.)

Aside from the coffered ceilings in the living room, the new walnut floors and the rest of the tasteful touches thoughout, there is, naturally, an extremely impressive kitchen. It features an enormous white statuary marble island. Off to one side of the kitchen is a wine fridge, on the counter is an espresso maker; there’s also a built-in microwave and dishwasher, and the range has a griddle. After scouring the cabinets Heffernan pulls out a silver Demeyere pot and a Vitamix (“a very high-speed blender,” he says).

One of Heffernan’s favorite things about the kitchen is that it has a magnificent view of the cove, where he caught bluefish with a novice fisherman (who had never caught a fish before) on this particular outing.

After docking his boat at his slip — where he keeps crab and oyster pots and clam rakes (part of the Southold Project in Aquaculture Training, an effort to repopulate the shellfish in Sag Harbor) — Heffernan plucks from the small garden out back, near the swimming pool, a clove of garlic, an heirloom tomato, some purple sage, tarragon and a small chili pepper. After scaling and gutting three bluefish, he puts them all in a pan.

With the smell of melting butter and garlic wafting in the air, Heffernan chats about food, fishing and real estate (the Heffernans also have an apartment at the Chelsea Mercantile).

“You know, I was the consulting chef on 15 Central Park West,” Heffernan says, as he stirs the fish around the silver pan.

They have a restaurant?

“Oh yeah.”

It is apparently, a private affair. But if you’re buddies with residents like Denzel Washington or Sandy Weill, you might be able to finagle a table.

As he’s speaking, into the kitchen strides one of Heffernan’s oldest friends, Tom Colicchio of Craft and “Top Chef” fame. (Colicchio didn’t knock.) After a polite greeting, Colicchio casually takes a seat at the marble island and begins fiddling with his BlackBerry.

“We met in the South of France in 1985 or ’86,” Heffernan says. “And I was the sous chef at Mondrian.”

Heffernan finishes cooking up his catch — what does he call this dish?

“I was just improvising,” Heffernan says. “I actually have no idea how it’s going to taste.”

Colicchio declines to take a taste, but it’s delicious. Worthy of the man who loves fish so much he puts them on his walls.

PetMD’s Top 5 Puppy Training Tips

PetMD’s Top 5 Puppy Training Tips

If you’re looking for a great resource of information on puppy training and wellness information you might want to check out PetMD, their website covers a wide range of topics and is very informative. Below is an article from their website on puppy training.

It is important to have a well-trained puppy. Not only does it make you look good in your friends’ and neighbors’ eyes, but it also means fewer accidents for you to clean up. Also, a well-trained puppy means a well-trained grown-up dog.

1. Be Patient

If you’re calm, your puppy will be less excitable. And please, no yelling — your puppy is just a baby. Remember, you are teaching your pup how to do things correctly because it does not know any better, the poor thing.

2. Treat Theory

We’re talking bribery here, plain and simple. When your puppy does something good, reward the behavior immediately with lots of praise and a delicious, healthy treat. If it makes you feel better, you can call the bribery “positive reinforcement.” The point is, your puppy will remember what happens when it does something good, and will continue doing it.

3. Secret Ignoring Business

Puppies believe the entire universe revolves around them, and one of the best things in life is all the attention they get (and treats, of course). If your puppy does something naughty, do not yell or reprimand; good or bad, it is still attention. Simply move away and ignore it. This method is very effective and is used to show the pup what you consider to be unacceptable behavior.

4. Replacement Therapy

A puppy does not know what it can and can not do until it is told. Instead of punishing your pup when it chews on a shoe, say “no” in a firm voice, and then take the item away, replacing it with one of the puppy’s allowable chew toys. Immediately praise it for chewing on the “good” toy. Soon, your puppy will be conditioned to the rules of the house.

5. Be Consistent

This says it all. Make sure you are consistent with everything you do so your puppy does not get confused. Dog therapy and anti-anxiety meds for an erratic puppy can be expensive down the road, so better to get the steps right the first time.

How to travel with your pet on an airplane

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Planning on taking a vacation? Hoping to take your Manor Lake Australian Labradoodle with you? Will you be traveling by airplane? Here are a few simple steps in preparing to take your four legged companion along with you.

First you’ll need to contact the airline you’re traveling with and make sure to let them know you’re adding a dog to your travel reservations. The airline will ask for some information on your pet, their breed, age and size. Let them know if your dog will be traveling in cabin with you, or if you need to check them into cargo. In order to take a pet in cabin with you, you need to have a soft sided airline approved carrier and the dog typically needs to be under 15lbs. Check with your airline though, because every airline has their own set of travel restrictions. If you plan on checking your dog in make sure you have a hard crate that is airline approved, is big enough for the dog to sit up in, stand and turn around without hitting their head on the top of the crate, you’ll also need to have food and water dishes attached to the doors of the crate.

Once you have the appropriate travel reservations made and the correct crate, you need to get a health certificate that is signed and dated in blue ink from your veterinarian. The airlines will ask for this when you are checking in your dog at the airport, this is just a piece of paper that deems them healthy to travel.

Some of our preferred airline carriers are-

Alaska Airlines

Continental Airlines

American Airlines

Other helpful things to bring with you when you travel with your pet are-
-A leash and collar for walking your pet before you check them in and after you pick them up.
-Make sure you have ID tags on your dog and on their crate with your name, phone number, address and name of the dog- along with your destination address and information.
-Bring along a bag of their kibble.

So when traveling with your pet remember to have the appropriate crate or kennel for them and check with the airline you’re traveling with as each airline has their own fees, rules and restrictions on traveling with pets.

Manor Lake Addie and Oliver

Thank you Katrina for your awesome photo and update on Manor Lake Addie and Oliver, they look terrific!

Hi Kim and Mollie,

Attached is a photo of Oliver and Addison from this weekend.

They are doing wonderfully.  I am amazed at how much happier Oliver is with a sibling.  They love playing and running together.  It is so darn cute!  Oliver is working on agility training with me, and Addie is about to start her intro obedience class.  So they are both keeping busy with their training.  My cousins came for a visit this weekend – they had 3 kids under the age of 5.  Needless to say both doodles were very tired.  It was Addie’s first time meeting kids, and she did wonderfully.  Both of them had fun playing fetch and chase with the kids.  They are both great dogs and their personalities complement each other quite nicely.  Oliver is the cynic and Addie is my little optimist.  She still falls for air cookies, where as Oliver needs proof of treat before he does any of his tricks J.

I just wanted to send you picture of them and let you know they are doing great.  Thank you again for such great dogs!  I am totally hooked!
