Helping Your New Puppy Settle In

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting for both your family and your new puppy. The first week to ten days are very important in bonding with your puppy and making them feel welcome. Leaving home, their mother and litter mates is a big life change for a puppy but with some patience, time, positive encouragement and lots of love your puppy will fit right in with your routine and family. There are a few simple things you can do to help make your puppy’s transition go smoothly.

-Try to refrain from having a lot of visitors over or overwhelming your puppy with a lot of activity in the first week of arriving.

-Set aside a lot of time to spend with your puppy when they first come home, this is the time where your puppy will bond with you.

-Don’t panic if your puppy’s appetite seems a bit off, this is normal in transitioning into a new home. Offering your puppy some plain canned food is ok too.

-If you have young children make sure to monitor them and your puppy, teaching children how to hold a puppy is also important, their bottom should always be supported.

-Consistency is key, this applies always, being consistent with your puppy is crucial in helping them settle in and figure out your routine.

-Pick a place for your puppy to sleep at night, there really isn’t a right answer here, you can have your puppy sleep in your room with you, in your child’s room or in another room in your home. Picking one place that the puppy can feel is their own is helpful in making them feel secure.

-Finally the most important is giving your puppy lots and lots of love!

Stella in Boston

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Hi Kim and Mollie,

I have to share this photo of Stella watching tv. See attached. Im certainly biased but I think it is the cutest dog photo ever!! One of her favorite shows is america’s funniest videos and this particular video starred a handsome German Shepherd that definitely caught Stella’s attention. This isnt a rare event – she actually does this frequently when something on the tv catches her attention.  I have been sharing the photo with folks and universally it makes everyone smile!!  I can not tell you what it has meant to have Stella in my life. She is literally the sweetest, smartet, cutest dog ever. EVERYONE comments about how lovely, well behaved and sweet she is. I will be walking her and people smile at her as they drive by.People stop me everywhere to comment on her.  The snow has been brutal here in the Northeast. I can not wait until it all goes away but Miss Stella loves jumping and running in it. She chases snowballs and chomps away eating it!

I think I told you that I had been checking your adult dog page for about two years on and off and it was fate that day that I saw her posted. I knew she was the dog for me.  Her dog walker loves her to pieces and the girls at the doggie daycare adore her. Some disabled children from a local school visit the doggie daycare and stella is the diplomat that is always allowed into area. Apparently she is wonderful with them and they all love her softness and sweetness. My parents love her and my 11 yr old neice and nephew beg to sleep over and to babysit her.  She has quite the life here. It is safe to say she is living a very pampered life.

Hope you are both doing well and thank you again for lovely Stella.

Warmest regards,

Gail

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted, or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 cups sliced banana, berries and mango
  • 1 cup plain yogurt

Preparation

Pre-heat a griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, butter and honey. Gently whisk in the whole wheat and all-purpose flours, baking powder and cinnamon.

Spray the griddle with cooking spray. Drop the batter, 2 tablespoons at a time, onto the greased griddle. Cook the pancakes until bubbles begin to form and break, about 3 minutes. Press a few pieces of fruit into each pancake, then flip and cook until brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Drizzle with the yogurt and top with the remaining fruit.
